SYNOPSIS

BOTERO, THE LEGACY is the definitive documentary profile of the Colombian artist Fernando Botero – a poetic behind-the-scenes look at the life and art of this driven and talented man, now 85 years old. Viewers will be inspired by Botero’s commitment to the unique artistic vision powers his rise from rural Colombia to the pinnacle of the art world today.

MORE ABOUT FILM

BOTERO, THE LEGACY chronicles the journey of a young painter from provincial Colombia as he stays true to himself and his vision while ascending to the pinnacle of the art world.

Filmed over the course of a year, BOTERO, THE LEGACY features artistically shot original footage from Shanghai, Rome, Florence, Pietrasanta, Paris, Provence, New York, Monaco, Medellin and Bogota.

This portrait is presented through the eyes of the artist’s only daughter, Lina Botero Zea, an art expert and talented on-camera raconteur. The film features extraordinary access to the artist and his family, along with interviews of an international cast of curators, critics, art historians and average citizens.

Highlights include an extended visit to the artist’s private studio in Monaco and a moment of discovery in a New York art storage facility that had been shuttered for decades.

This is the life story that’s never been told — a personal perspective presented with grace and passion.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

In November 2015 Fernando Botero made his first visit to China, and I was along for the ride.

Maestro Botero became the first living western artist to exhibit at the National Museum of China on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square – a highlight in a lifetime of honors.

As as a guest at the opening events, watching Botero placidly navigate the chaos and excitement stimulated my curiosity. Seeing his art touch the masses a world away from his Colombian birthplace inspired my passion to tell the story of his life.

One year later Lina Botero, an art world expert and a wonderful story teller, agreed to join the project. With Lina, the artist’s only daughter, as our tour guide through Botero’s exciting world, our team literally hit the road in Europe, the United States and Colombia.

This journey of discovery that has revealed a man who, remarkably, seems to draw strength from elite opposition to his unique artistic vision. We have learned about Botero’s calling as a man grounded in the history of art, determined to bring a smile to average people far beyond the salons and galleries that define success for many artists.

Our mission is to tell the inspiring story of a massively successful man who, at 85, still enters his studio every day with humility, simply determined to master his craft.
